Third grade students have been learning about melody and using the pentatonic scale. We learned a song "Happy Wanderer" and played a simple pattern with the chorus. Next, students used the pentatonic scale to compose their own melody to play with the song. Below you will find links to YouTube videos of a few of those melodies. Students practiced them today and they will be playing their melody with the song after we return from Thanksgiving break.
11/19 Students started their research today. They are in groups of four working together to answer the essential questions which can be found on the PBL website. We will be having a guest composer speaking to us via Skype the week after Thanksgiving. I am very excited for students to hear about composing from someone who is an active composer! Students in Mr. Caspers' AM class started a PBL today. The focus of our PBL is how music affects the brain and how to compose a piece of music to positively impact the learning environment.
I played three different pieces of music and asked students to listen to each one and be able to describe the thoughts, feelings, emotions, and musical elements that they heard in the music. Students came up with a great list of musical elements that contributed to the way the music made them feel. Music played: 1. Moonlight Sonata--Beethoven (blue writing); 2. Spring--Vivaldi (bottom black writing); 3. Toccata and Fugue in D minor--Bach (top black writing) Students also were asked to brainstorm types of music that would be appropriate for different situations and environments. This list was a way to prepare them for their decision on what type of music they will be composing for their PBL. Here's just a quick update on what's happening in our classroom! First Grade students are learning about high and low sounds and melodic direction. Second grade is practicing a fun hand clapping game to go along with the song "Miss Mary Mack." We are also working on reading melodies using so, mi, and la. Third grade students are learning about melody and using the pentatonic scale to compose a two measure pattern to play along with the song "Happy Wanderer." Level 3 students (4th and 5th grade) are learning recorder and are diligently practicing to earn their recorder karate belts. I will be uploaded pictures and links to YouTube videos of different things that we are working on this week. Below you will find a link to a YouTube video of 2nd graders practicing "Miss Mary Mack." I had the wonderful opportunity to meet many parents during parent teacher conferences last week. Thank you to everyone who signed up for a conference. It was great speaking with everyone regarding music at Forest Glen. I know many of you did not sign up for a conference or were not able to sign up due to limited time slots. At the conferences, I gave parents a brief curriculum guide overview that states what we accomplish in music at each grade level. The curriculum guides are available for download on this post. I also shared with parents the open house dates for the year. Students in 1st, 3rd, and 4th/5th grade classes will be performing during their open house this year. Here are the dates: Thursday, February 12th--Third grade Wednesday, March 25th--Level 3, 4th/5th grade Thursday, May 14th--First grade More information will be given as we approach each performance. Thanks for supporting music! Mrs. Quintero
Students in 4th and 5th grade chorus will be performing in their fall concert next Wednesday, November 19th at Hadley Middle School. If you have a student in chorus, please go to the chorus tab for more information.
If you do not have a student in chorus, you are more than welcome to attend the concert! Watch and listen as students from across the district perform fun and energetic songs. The concert begins at 7:00 in the auditorium at Hadley Middle School. We hope to see you there! Thank you for supporting music in Glen Ellyn. Mrs. Quintero First grade students had fun with a Halloween song last week. We learned to sing it using our piano (quiet) and forte (loud) voices and we also played instrument with different sections of the song. The students did a great job and enjoyed playing the classroom instruments.
