The students are extremely excited start our unit on recorders. Recorder is a wind instrument that will prepare them for playing band or orchestra instruments in the future. In our recorder unit, your child will learn how to use their breath correctly to play the recorder and they will learn to read music on the music staff. I am excited to begin this recorder journey with our 3rd grade students. I do allow students to bring home their recorders to practice at home. Having said that, there are a few very important rules that I want to share with you: 1. Students must play with their LEFT hand on top. The left hand thumb is placed on the thumb hole on the back of their recorder. 2. Students should play with soft, gentle, warm air. 3. I have asked that students play recorder at home or in the music room only. Not in the hallways, other classrooms, or on the bus. As we learn various songs, I will be posting them below so your child can practice at home. In the meantime, check out a few fun websites that the students can practice with as well as a basic recorder introduction that I've used in class. As always, let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Mrs. Quintero
Every year, students have an open house event where they bring parents to their classroom to showcase their work. In third grade, there is also a music performance the same night as open house. The third grade open house is on Thursday, February 11th and the performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the old gym. Students have the opportunity to request a copy of the show songs on a CD to practice with at home. A permission slip will be sent home with your child this week. If you would like a CD at home for your student to use, please fill out the order form and return it to school. CD's will start going home Thursday, January 14th. Also, all the lyrics to our songs will be added to this post as we learn the songs. Check back often for more updates. If you have any questions regarding the open house performance, please contact me via e-mail or call to leave a voicemail. Thank you for supporting music education for your student at Forest Glen! Third grade students are currently studying the instruments of the orchestra. We learned about various instruments by completing an instrument investigation. Students were paired up and assigned an instrument. They researched their instrument using books and the internet, and then created a poster to present to their class that contained facts about their instrument. Our unit also included a field experience to Glenbard West High School so the students could experience the instruments first hand. Students traveled to GBW on Tuesday, September 29th and were able to see the marching band and the concert orchestra perform inside the GBW auditorium. This was an amazing experience for our students and we appreciate GBW opening its doors to the elementary schools in District 41. The band and orchestra showcased each instrument separately so the students could hear the unique sound. They also played a few pieces so the students could hear how the instruments work together to make beautiful music. I was able to capture part of our day through pictures and video. Take a look at the slideshow below and the YouTube videos to see what the students experienced. Thanks for supporting music education at Forest Glen! Mrs. Quintero Students in third grade are participating in Recorder Karate in which they earn a belt for every song they successfully play. All students just completed "Hot Cross Buns" and earned their white belt for the song. Next on their list is "Gently Sleep" and they will earn their yellow belt if they successfully complete the song. The criteria on which they will be graded is: steady tempo, correct rhythm, correct pitches, observing the breath marks, and tonguing each note. Students are testing at school by recording themselves using an iPad and then I watch it and fill out a rubric. If students choose, they may record themselves using a tablet or smart phone at home and e-mail the video to me at [email protected]. Once I receive the video, I will watch it and grade their performance. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail or call at any time. The music for "Gently Sleep" has been posted in a previous blog post (scroll down). As always, thanks for stopping by!
Mrs. Quintero Students in second grade have spent the last few weeks learning about the instruments of the orchestra and how the instruments are grouped into families. There are four families of instruments--woodwind, string, brass, and percussion. Each family has specific characteristics which defines the family and groups the instruments together. This week, the students are exploring a fun, interactive and educational website to learn more about the instruments. The students can also access this website from home and it is free to use. Students may play "Local Game" or they may register and create an account. It is each students' and parents choice what they would like to do. Click the button below for access to the website. Thanks! Mrs. Quintero Watch the full length performance of The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra below! Third grade students are starting their recorder unit this week! They are so excited to learn to play this instrument and I am excited to teach them! Each student will be given a recorder that belongs to them and the recorder will be labeled with the students' name. The students are allowed to bring their recorders home to practice but they must remember to bring them back to school to use in music class. If a student forgets repeatedly, it will affect their works habits grade for music. As we are going through this unit, I will be posting songs on the website for student to practice at home as well as helpful hints. There is also a great website that students can access at home called Squeakys Recorder Playhouse. See the link below to be directed to the site. Check back often for more updates on the students' progress! Mrs. Quintero
Last week on Friday, our third grade students had the opportunity to attend the Elgin Symphony Orchestra to see a performance called "The Thrill of the Orchestra." This performance introduced students to the families and instruments of the orchestra. It was a great experience for our students and we had a wonderful time. Please see the letter below for more information from the ESO.
